Casentino is the area of Tuscany that surrounds the upper course of the Arno River from its source to the city of Arezzo. Casentino is a land of castles, parish churches, convents, monasteries, medieval villages and fortified retreats. It is rightfully considered to be one of the most beautiful valleys of Tuscany, and it was here that San Francisco establishedthed of Assisi, the Franciscan order and St. Romuald built his hermitages. Therefore, the Casentino is often referred to as "the valley of the soul."
The Casentino lies on both sides of the river Arno, with a height of between 30 and 60 km. The largest cities are located along the course of the Arno, the most important Poppi and Poppi. The villages in the surrounding hills and mountains are smaller. These include Chitignano, Chiusi della Verna, Montemignaio, Castagneto Carducci, and size.
Stia is the first town in the Casentino which crosses the Arno at its sources flow from Mt. Falterona. It was on the local wool factory that the famous green and orange-Casentino red tissue has occurred since the mid-nineteenth century. The design of the city still does not speak of this identity-yet-forgotten: first, the antique market in the Piazza Tanucci, the site of the old wool-processing shops and rightly called one of the most beautiful squares in Italy.
Following in the path Arno, Poppi is Situated on a hill overlooking the river, right in the center of the Casentino. From Poppi is still off the beaten track, remains wonderfully intact. In the historical center of Poppi There are several restaurants, but if you need more options, take a look at the new town (Ponte a Poppi) down the hill.
Poppi Castle is the most important historical building of the whole Casentino. Having always been used as a residence for the authorities local, is one of the best preserved in all of Tuscany. If you are dreaming of a wedding in Tuscany ', You will be surprised to know the castle is now owned Poppi Community and its main hall is therefore available for civil weddings.
Only a few kilometers of the road from Poppi, Poppi is a charming medieval town with many nice shops and a weekly market. One of the more interesting attractions here is the theater scene, and Costume Design Museum established in 2005. As its name suggests, the museum is dedicated to the art of theater and each of its many sections is the story of a particular type of theater, including Greek theaters, Roman, Renaissance Theater, to modern theater. A few miles from downtown Bibbiena visit Serravalle, a fortified mountain with a medieval tower.
After a B-road that goes from Bibbiena you can reach the small village of La Beccia. Here you can park your car and take the road paved until the huge rock formation, where St. Francis and his followers put their house in 1230. In the shadow of the "Oil Sasso" Monte della Verna can be found the city of Chiusi, a settlement that was developed mostly in the 19th century as a welcoming place for pilgrims on their way to the shrine.
If the road has steep hunger, no need to worry. Casentino is also famous for some of the tastiest food specialties that has ever been outside the Tuscany. A pork sausage called Sanbudello 'and the local ham (prosciutto) are very popular among residents and tourists. Other products premises not to be missed include the cheese "Abbuciato 'along with chestnuts, mushrooms and red potatoes Cetica grown with traditional methods and those used in the preparation of "Tortelli.
